The honest answer: for most people hypnosis is safe — but "safe" doesn't mean "magic", and being clear about its limits matters as much as its benefits.

In my practice in Breukelen, near Utrecht, I work to find the root cause of an issue rather than manage the symptom. The approach is structured, calm, and built entirely on conscious cooperation — you are awake, aware and in control the whole time.

Hypnosis is focused attention, not loss of control

Films show swinging watches and stage performers losing control. Real clinical hypnotherapy is none of that. Hypnosis is a state you already enter every day — just before sleep, or when you're so immersed in something that the room fades. Focused attention, relaxed body, aware mind.

You remain aware throughout. You remember everything. You can stop the session at any moment, and you cannot be made to act against your values. In session I use this natural state intentionally — to reach the part of you that knows where a problem began.

This isn't a mystical trance. It's the deliberate use of your own capacity for focus. James Braid, who named hypnotism in 1843, described it as conscious concentration on a single idea — not a loss of consciousness. Modern practice builds entirely on that conscious engagement.[6]

Hypnotherapy isn't performance. It's deep listening — and the exit door is always in your hands.

Is it safe? An honest answer

Answering this properly means being honest. Hypnosis is safe in a therapeutic setting when facilitated by a trained practitioner. It is not a replacement for medical care, it is not a cure-all, and individual response varies.

I work within the OMNI Advanced framework — founded in 1979 by Gerald Kein on the techniques of Dave Elman, and in 2015 the first hypnosis process to gain ISO 9001 certification. That matters because it means the work follows a structured, audited clinical arc, not a practitioner's improvisation.

And it means I look for the structure, not just the symptom. If you arrive with panic attacks, I don't simply teach breathing techniques — we look for the moment that response was first created in your system, and resolve it there.

63%

Report a benefit

In one analysis, 63.1% of people who underwent hypnosis treatment reported a resulting benefit.[8]

~60%

Are hypnotisable

An analysis of over 100,000 users found that around 60–67% of people have the capacity to enter a hypnotic state.[7]

15–20%

Low responders

Roughly 15–20% are "low responders" who find the state harder to reach — one reason I offer a 30-minute consultation first.[9]

What hypnotherapy can do

Clinical hypnotherapy is effective for resolving specific issues by addressing them at the source. In practice:

Anxiety & fears — we don't just calm the nervous system; we find where the fear was formed and resolve it at the root.

Habits — stopping smoking or procrastination is the outcome, not the focus; we address the subconscious driver beneath it.

Stress & burnout — reconnecting body and mind to ease chronic tension and untangle nervous-system overload.

Confidence — working with the inner critic, performance blocks and impostor patterns, back to a baseline of self-trust.

The published literature supports focused states for anxiety and performance,[3][4] and documents real effects on pain perception.[5]

What hypnosis can't (or won't) do

Understanding the limits is just as important. Hypnosis is not "rewriting your subconscious" or implanting false beliefs — that's neuro-nonsense. It is not a guaranteed cure, and response varies between people.

If you need medical care, see a doctor. If you need psychiatric care, see a psychiatrist. I'll tell you honestly when this work isn't right for you — and if there's an underlying medical condition that needs treatment, I decline to proceed until that's addressed.[1][2] This work is about returning you to a state where you can live without the problem. In the focused state we follow that path deliberately, your system reveals the origin, and resolution follows.
