The psychology of choking: why high-performers lose access to their skills

What choking really is

Two competing theories explain most of what researchers currently understand about choking under pressure.
- Explicit monitoring theory: pressure makes performers self-conscious about their own technique, so they start consciously controlling a movement that used to run on autopilot. The conscious brain is slower and clumsier at this than the trained motor system it interrupts.
- Distraction theory: pressure floods working memory with worry — "what if I miss," "everyone's watching" — leaving less mental bandwidth for the task itself.
Both mechanisms point to the same conclusion. Choking isn't a character flaw. It's a nervous system doing exactly what it was trained to do, just under a different, more threatening set of rules.
Why high-performers lose access more than beginners
This is the part that surprises most people. Beginners rarely choke in the classic sense, because their skills were never automatic to begin with. High-performers are the ones with the most to protect and the most automaticity to disrupt — their skill lives in procedural memory, movement that happens without deliberate thought.
Put that same person under a spotlight, with money, ranking, or a career riding on the outcome, and the brain often reverts to deliberate, step-by-step control. That's when choking takes hold, because deliberate control is slower and less precise than the automatic pattern it interrupts.

The same pattern in sport, esports, and exams
In competitive sport, it shows up as the missed putt, the double fault, the seven seconds before a football strike that decide the outcome. A 2026 review of the available research still points to the same core finding: cognitive load and self-focus are the mechanisms most consistently linked to performance collapse under pressure.
One striking study asked students to spend ten minutes writing about their fears immediately before a high-stakes test. Students who sat quietly instead saw their accuracy on difficult problems fall by roughly 12%, while those who wrote about their worries actually improved.
